Every card a player drops from their hand removes a card from the unknown pool for every opponent. A drop is two things at once: it frees a slot in the player's hand, and it changes what every other player can infer. A drop from a pure sequence candidate tells a sharp opponent that the dropped card is safe to pick from the closed pile. A drop of an obviously random card (a 7 of spades, a 2 of clubs) is information only about the player's hand, not about the unknown pool. A drop pattern that consistently avoids one suit is a signal that the opponent is building a long run in that suit. Rummy probability is not a single number — it is a small set of conditional probabilities that change as the hand progresses. Two are worth tracking by name. The probability that the next closed-deck pick completes a specific pure-sequence slot is calculable from the cards the player can see (own hand, all discards, open card) and the cards the player cannot see (the rest of the closed deck, the opponents' hands). The probability that an opponent's open-card pick will complete one of their probable sequences is also calculable, but only with more uncertainty. The point of running these calculations is not to memorise a number. The point is to choose a discard that minimises the chance the opponent picks a complementary card.

A simple, repeatable rule

  • If the open card completes an obvious run for one opponent, drop it.
  • If the closed deck has been reshuffled recently, treat any middle-rank drop as information.
  • If a joker was just shown in the discard pile, lower the value of building around that joker slot in the impure sequence.
  • If your hand has two near-complete pure sequences and a single impure one, declare as soon as the impure one closes.
  • If your hand cannot reach two pure sequences by mid-game, plan the drop call, not the declaration.

Opponent modelling: a small, useful model beats a complete one

The best opponent model is small, current, and updateable. Three variables per opponent cover most of the value: drop pattern (which ranks and suits are being dropped, which are being preserved), declaration speed (does this opponent declare in mid-game or late), and joker-pool usage (is this opponent holding jokers or playing them). Once a reader has those three variables per opponent, the discard decision has a frame: drop the card that is least useful to this set of opponents, not the card that is least useful in the abstract.

The trap to avoid

The trap is over-modelling. A reader who tries to track every probable opponent hand for three opponents at once is reading the opponents, not their own hand. The discipline is: keep the model small, refresh it every hand, and trust the discard decision over the declaration decision. A correct drop is more recoverable than a correct declaration that runs out of time.

Variance: the part strategy cannot reach

Variance is the difference between expected and actual outcome across hands. In rummy, variance is high in the short run and falls as the session length grows. A 10-hand session is variance-dominated: a player who plays well above expectation can lose, and a player who plays well below expectation can win. A 200-hand session is closer to expectation-dominated: variance still exists, but the gap between a deliberate player and an undisciplined one shows through.
